How do I unzip (extract) a file or folder in Windows?

Zipped (compressed) files may be necessary when sharing files by email, uploading files to Moodle, or sharing files by social media software (e.g., Teams). Zipped files and folders are smaller and take up less storage space. A zipped file must be extracted before it can be viewed.

Answer

Step 1. Locate the file or folder you want to extract.

Step 2. Right-click the file or folder. Select “Extract All.”

Step 3. You can select a specific location to save the file. By default, the extracted file will be stored in the same location as the compressed file.

Note: By default, "Show extracted file when complete" will be selected. This will cause a second file explorer window to immediately open with the newly extracted file. If you deselect this option, you will simply see the new file in the existing file explorer window.
